ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Lucas di Grassi secured a hard-fought victory in Race Two of the 2022 London E-Prix to take a record-equalling 13th win in the FIA Formula E World Championship.
After finishing ninth in Race One, the Brazilian executed a strong qualifying to advance to the Final of the duel stages, where he was pipped to pole position by Jake Dennis.
Lucas remained within striking distance of the Briton throughout the race while team-mate, Edoardo Mortara, fought forward from the outset after starting from 17th.
The Swiss-Italian racer moved up to 16th on the opening lap and continued his charge throughout the race, slotting into the top 10 in the 16th minute after passing Antonio Giovinazzi.
At the head of the field, Lucas continued his pursuit of Dennis and by activating his third and final use of Attack Mode 17 minutes from the flag, began to apply further pressure on the Andretti driver.
By under consuming energy with the power advantage, Lucas had a greater amount of energy available and took the lead when Dennis himself activated Attack Mode with eight minutes + one lap to go.
Despite having more power at his disposal, Dennis was unable to keep pace, with Lucas taking the chequered flag to take a controlled win – his first for ROKiT Venturi Racing and the 13th of his career.
After battling into the top 10, a spin in Turn One relegated Edo outside of the points-paying positions, with a subsequent five-second time penalty demoting him to 13th in the final classification.
Taking home a haul of 26 points, ROKiT Venturi Racing holds second in the World Teams ’Championship while Edo maintains third in the Drivers ’Standings with 144 points.
The FIA Formula E World Championship’s eighth season will conclude on 13-14 August at the inaugural Seoul E-Prix – the home of the series ’100th race and the final event of its Gen2 era.
“It was a fantastic race today - awesome drives in qualifying and the race from Lucas to achieve this first and well deserved win with the team. Unfortunately, it didn’t go Edo’s way today, but that’s Formula E and I have no doubt that he will come back fighting in Seoul. “This result means everything to me. I had a great battle with Jake [Dennis] and from start to finish, the race was very strategic. I think we timed our Attack Modes perfectly and that allowed us to build a good energy buffer and then, when the time was right, I was able to spend the energy, open a gap and then hold the lead from there. The team gave me the perfect car today and after what happened in Race One, I think we deserve this result. I’m proud of everyone in the garage and with only two races to go, the fight is on. We have to give everything we have in Seoul.”
“This weekend has been difficult, and I’m frustrated not to have finished inside the top 10. We were able to come through the field quite quickly overall after starting down in 17th, and because of our strategy, I think we were in a strong position to score good points. When I was trying to overtake [Sam] Bird, Pascal [Wehrlein] pulled out in front of me and I had to brake quite hard but locked the rears which caused me to spin. After that, I tried to see what else I could get but with the penalty, there was little I could do. There are only two races to go this season, and after two challenging weekends, I want to end the year on a high.”
